Conall Murtagh Profile 2011
Conall is a graduate from the DNA internship scheme in August 2011. He is currently in the final stages of completing his Masters in Sports Science from the University of Chester, and graduated with a BSc Honours in physiology from the University of Manchester in June, 2008.
Whilst studying at University of Manchester Conall, was awarded with a place on the Sports Scholarship Scheme and received strength and conditioning support from DNA Sports Performance. A professional footballer at Hearts for 2 years before enrolling at the University of Manchester, Conall returned to full time football in the final year of his degree with League 2 side Wrexham AFC. During his football career to date, he has played professional football in Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales, also competing in two UEFA Cup campaigns.
Conall posseses considerable experience within the strength and conditioning industry. During an internship at DNA Sports Performance (2010-2011), he assisted in providing strength and conditioning support to elite athletes from the University of Manchester’s Scholarship Scheme and the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme in the North West of England. Over the course of the year, he consulted a total of 22 different sports giving him a diverse and very in depth experience of providing strength and conditioning support to high performance athletes.
In the same year (2010-2011), Conall also completed an internship at Bolton Wanderers Football Club which involved providing sports science and strength and conditioning support to all academy players up to the age of 19. This involved conducting team gym based strength and conditioning sessions, gym and pitch based injury prevention sessions, and pitch based biomechanical optimisation and intermittent conditioning sessions.
Conall is now currently employed as the Sports Science Performance Consultant for the New Saints Football Club who are a full time professional team in the Welsh Premier League and regularly compete European Competitions such as the Champions League and UEFA Cup. He provides sports science support to the first team which involves periodic physiological testing, strength and conditioning sessions, on field conditioning, injury prevention sessions, and nutritional support. He is also fulfilling a role heading up the sports science and strength and conditioning at both Wrexham AFC Centre of Excellence and The Saints Academy where he is in the process of implementing a cutting edge soccer specific Long Term Athlete development Programme.
Conall possess up to date knowledge and is familiar with the most cutting edge research tools. He possesses experience of operating the most innovative technology and has experience in the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) in the applied field.
Conall is also an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Manchester for DNA Sports Performance.
