Level 1 ~ Residential Internships 2011/12

DNA Sports Performance aims to provide scientifically underpinned strength and conditioning services to elite and amateur athletes across the UK. We have a proven track record in helping maximise the genetic potential of athletes in various sports and are currently working with Olympic and professional athletes across a diverse range of sports.

 

Working alongside The University of Manchester SPORT Department, we are offering an excellent opportunity for individuals to experience high performance strength and conditioning support within an applied context.

 

This internship offers an intensive five day programme for individuals who are looking to enhance their practical and theoretical understanding of strength and conditioning. The internship also aims to provide an insight into the operation of strength and conditioning support to a major sporting University in the UK, National Governing Bodies and TASS athletes ( http://www.tass.gov.uk/ ).

 

The internship has been developed in addition to our highly successful annual internship programme which has seen five interns in four years pass UKSCA assessment and move into employment.

 

Successful applicants can expect the following from the five day intensive internship:

 

Theoretical and Practical Experiences Covering:

  • Advanced weight lifting techniques

  • Advanced plyometrics techniques

  • Advanced speed and agility techniques

  • Advanced conditioning interventions

  • Advanced planning and programming techniques

  • Advanced injury prevention techniques

  • Advanced recovery strategies

  • Advanced mobility and flexibility techniques

  • A minimum of 25 hours of contact time and an additional 10 hours directed theory, detailing the topics to a depth which day long courses just cannot deliver

 

Application requirements:

  • Have previously or currently be enrolled in a sports related qualification i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate degree
  • Have an understanding of sports conditioning
  • Have an understanding of resistance training methods
  • Have good knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Be committed to training and be interested in strength and conditioning as a career
  • Be confident when speaking to groups, open minded and willing to learn

Internship Presenters:

Nicholas Jones BSc (Hons), MSc, CSCS, ASCC, ISAK ~ Nick is certified by both the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCC) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (USA; CSCS). He holds an honours degree in sports and exercise management, a masters degree in strength and conditioning and is undertaking a PhD in the field of strength and conditioning. Nick has extensive experience in team sports having coached for the Welsh Rugby Union, English Rugby Union, Sale Sharks, GB Water Polo, GB Cross Country Skiing and GB Wrestling. In his work with individual sports, Nick has coached a vast range of male and female athletes in various sports including able bodied and disability sports. Currently Nick is the lead strength and conditioning coach for Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) in the North West and at The University of Manchester.

 

Steve Nawoor Director and Physiotherapy Clinical Specialist, Msc Manual Therapy, BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy MMACP, MCSP, MMACP, ACPOE ~ Steve is Clinical Director of Physiotherapy at I.Q Therapies and has worked with England Athletics, GB Boxing and is currently the TASS Physiotherapy Lead for the North West. Steve also travels with elite sports teams and athletes in competition, has attended World and European Championships, has extensive multi-sport experience and is part of the Great Britain team for the World Games in China in August 2011. He is the North West representative for the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

 

Ray Williams ~ Ray is currently the National Welsh Weightlifting coach, based out of his performance centre in Holyhead, North Wales. He is a Commonwealth Gold medallist for weightlifting in the featherweight class. He also has extensive experience of working in rugby union specifically for the Welsh and Canadian Rugby Unions and served 24 years in the Army Physical Training Corps.

 

Internship Dates:

The residential internship will take place in The University of Manchester’s elite athlete training facility ‘The PowerRoom’ on the following weeks in 2012:

26th to 30th March

11th to 15th June

16th to 20th July

13th to 17th August

 

 

Internship Cost:

The total cost for the one week internship will be £250 and is payable in advance. This will include all support materials for the internship however food, travel and accommodation costs are not included.

Residential Cost:

The hotels listed below are all located close to The University of Manchester and will serve as an excellent location during the internship. It is also possible to travel into Manchester everyday if living locally to reduce costs. However please be aware there will be early morning and evening sessions during the week.
