Level 3 ~ Annual Internship 2011/12

DNA Sports Performance aims to provide scientifically underpinned strength and conditioning services to elite and amateur athletes across the UK. We have a proven track record in helping maximise the genetic potential of athletes in various sports and are currently working with Olympic and professional athletes across a diverse range of sports.

 

Working alongside The University of Manchester SPORT Department, we are seeking to recruit individuals to learn and develop vocational skills as a professional strength and conditioning coach through our internship programme.

 

The annual internship has been established for five years. During this time it has seen a number of individuals gain vital practical experience in order to gain accreditation and employment within the field. The annual internship takes the format of weekly support during academic terms at The University of Manchester; there is a minimum commitment of four hours per week which will be undertaken on consistently on one of the following days; Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.

 

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to lead on delivery of programmes for athletes on The University of Manchester’s successful Bronze level of their Manchester Sport Scholarship Scheme. In addition to this successful candidates will have the opportunity to learn about and assist delivery of programmes within the TASS North West S&C network linked to the North West hub site (http://www.tass.gov.uk/ ).

 

Successful applicants can expect the following from this internship:

Theoretical and Practical Experiences Covering:

  • Advanced weight lifting techniques

  • Advanced plyometrics techniques

  • Advanced speed and agility techniques

  • Advanced conditioning interventions

  • Advanced planning and programming techniques

  • Advanced injury prevention techniques

  • Advanced recovery strategies

  • Advanced mobility and flexibility techniques

 

Professional Development Package:

The internal professional development package will consist of a minimum of 25 hours of contact time focusing on the following areas:

  • Advanced weight lifting techniques

  • Advanced plyometrics techniques

  • Advanced speed and agility techniques

  • Advanced conditioning interventions

  • Advanced planning and programming techniques

  • Advanced injury prevention techniques

 

The external professional development package will consist of a minimum of 8 hours of contact time focusing on the following areas:

  • Service provision to elite athletes in education

  • Opportunities to develop an understanding of the TASS Network

  • Working within a multi-disciplinary team

  • Various opportunities to attend National Governing Body specific event

 

Application requirements:

  • Must reside or be looking to re-locate to the North West Region
  • Have or be enrolled in a sports related qualification i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
  • Sound understanding of sports conditioning
  • Sound understanding of resistance training methods
  • Sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Be committed, self motivated and reliable
  • Aspire to have a career in strength and conditioning
  • Be confident when speaking to groups, open minded and willing to learn
  • Current first aid certificate

  • Experience of competing in sport and some knowledge of various sporting disciplines

Contact Time:

Your practical coaching element will require a minimum of 4 hours per week in the ‘PowerRoom’ Manchester. The internships are split into four stages

  1. 1st September to 16th December
  2. 16th January to 23rd March
  3. 16th April to 8th June
  4. 8th June to 1st September (distance learning / CPD events only)

 

With the following weekly slots in stages 1, 2 and 3 offered:

Monday 17.00 till 21.00

Tuesday 7.00 till 11.00 / 11.00 till 16.00 / 16.00 till 20.00

Thursday 7.00 till 11.00 / 11.00 till 16.00 / 16.00 till 20.00

 

Internship Fees:

The fee of £500 is payable in one lump sum. This covers the cost of all internal CPD events (travel not included) and uniform (trainers not included).
